Fashionista Wear: Alice Chu

You know you are African when you grew up with a personal tailor and went to them for any occasion and got an aschobi. Memories like that never seem to leave you, hence one of the reasons why my love for fashion and design developed. As a blogger you get invited to countless events and its gets challenging to find something right off the rack. I designed this pant suit and went to one of my favorite tailors and made it. Pants can always be a bit of a challenge but this is what I came up with, A slimmer harem inspired pant with a subtle peplum top.

Fabric: Hollandais Wax
Peplum design at the side of the shirt
Bag- Vintage, Shoes- Christian Louboutin
Thanks to my bestie Perry Amati for the hair and Make-up, we had a fab night

Have a creative weekend!

Tokyo Fashion Week: Anrealage

The  first ever  Tokyo fashion week is in full swing and if I keep seeing collections like Anrealage, I'm eager to see the future of its fashionweek. Japanese designer Kunihiko Morinaga, took an architectural  and geometrical  approach to his spring 2013 collection for Anrealage.  It was interesting to see the cutout  and glow in the dark shapes of actual garments. They were clothes, but its cool that he made references to clothing within the clothing. Hopefully it's not too confusing. These are a couple of my favorites.

Stylist Video: Solange "Losing You"

Solange is coming out with a new album and I'm stoked since I've still been rocking her old album "Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams". I'm obsessed with her latest video for her single "Losing You." Shot in Capetown, South Africa it featured the always dapper Congolese Les Sapeurs.  I loved the way the video captured Africa's rawness and very cool fashionable vibe. I was brought back to Janet Jackson's Got 'til it's Gone" feat Q-Tip and Jonie Mitchell.

Here are some very fashionable scenes

Caged Bird: Alexander McQueen Spring 2013

Paris Fashion week just wrapped and I have to say it was thrilling. Alexander McQueen show was a showstopper. I fell in love with the amazing hats and caged bodice incorporated which accentuated the models waist.  Creative director Sara Burton, took us back to the hay days of the late Lee Alexander McQueen.  Right away I was reminded of one of my all time favorite poems "I know why the caged bird sings" By Maya Angelou. Here is an excerpt from the poem

The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

Antonio Berardi: Futuristic Layers

Sometimes its hard to believe that we are in the year 2012. Things have been evolving such as technology and new inventions. When I saw the Antonio Berardi ready to wear spring 2013 collection I was quickly reminded of this futuristic era. It embodies a blend of the cartoon "The Jetson" and the movie "The Fifth element". The shapes and mixture of fabrics are well balanced to tell a story of our forthcoming, easy to wear layers for every body type. Here are a couple of my favorite looks.

Etro Spring 2013

I can't get enough of the Etro spring 2103 ready to wear collection. I'm always simulated by bold colors and prints and Etro hit it right on the nose with this Asian influenced collection but with a silent nod to west Africa, I call it AsiaAfric. I just made that word up. Veronica Etro cited that she was feeling the primal discipline: martial arts, Orientalist paintings, the ingenuity of a dress cut from a square of fabric, the tradition of intricate knotting. she didn't mention anything about Africa, but I saw some of the influence through some of the cuts of the dresses, vivid colors and prints.

Mark Fast: Around The Way Girl

London fashion week is in full effect and I couldn't help but notice the Mark Fast collection. I keep singing LL Cool J's "Around The Way Girl", which came to mind with Fast's nod to the hip-hop. Ladies if you remeber that song, you know you wanted to be that girl in the video, trust I was one of them.  This collection is a fresh take on what I consider the "new homegirl".  She looks tough in the face, but wears light pastel colors and with a very girly polish. I adored everything from the fringed detailing to the metal-chained belts. Bravo to the designer for taking me back to my childhood. Here are a couple of my favorite looks from the collection.

NYFW:Christian Siriano

I attended the Christian Siriano spring 2013 presentation, one word describes what I felt, WOW.  It was like walking in a dream, that's how light and beautiful the gowns were. Siriano a former dancer was inspired by a performance of American Ballet Theatre's The Dream. His vision was thoroughly translated from the ballerina bun hair to the satin fabric shoes. Did I mention that the shoes were to die for. I loved him on project runway and I'm really not surprised to see how successful he has been.  Here are some of my favorite looks and a video I shot of the finale.

Don't be afraid to dream, have an inspiring weekend.
